A coalition of political stakeholders and grassroots leaders in Delta Central has called on former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, to honour his earlier commitment not to return to the Senate in 2027, warning that any reversal could dent his legacy.

In a statement released over the weekend, the group distanced itself from individuals allegedly encouraging the former lawmaker to contest the Delta Central Senatorial seat again, insisting such calls do not represent the views of his genuine supporters.

The statement, jointly signed by several political figures and community leaders across the district, stressed that true loyalty lies in respecting Omo-Agege’s publicly stated decision to limit his Senate tenure to two terms.

“Those parading themselves as supporters of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and urging him to contest the 2027 Delta Central Senatorial election do not, in truth, reflect the values or convictions of his genuine followers,” the group said.

The stakeholders anchored their appeal on Omo-Agege’s declaration on May 19, 2023, following the Delta State governorship election, where he stated that his time in the National Assembly was a deliberate eight-year commitment.

According to the group, the former Deputy Senate President had made it clear that he did not believe in holding public office indefinitely and considered his tenure sufficient to make meaningful contributions.

“He stated unequivocally that eight years in the Senate was enough for him and that he had achieved his objectives,” the statement noted, referencing a report by Premium Times.

The coalition argued that Omo-Agege had already attained significant political milestones, including serving as Deputy Senate President, and should protect his reputation by remaining consistent with his words.

“As a distinguished statesman, he has made his mark and earned widespread respect. There is nothing further for him to prove in the Senate,” the group stated.

They warned that pressure from certain quarters to re-enter the race could undermine the principles that have defined his political career.

“It is troubling that some individuals would seek to pressure a man of proven character to go back on his word. Such calls do not strengthen his legacy—they risk diminishing it,” the statement added.

Citing the values of the Urhobo people, the stakeholders emphasized the importance of honour, integrity, and consistency in leadership, noting that keeping his promise would further strengthen Omo-Agege’s standing.

They also highlighted that leadership is not measured by longevity in office but by adherence to principles and the ability to step aside when necessary.

“Allowing others to build on your achievements reflects true leadership and statesmanship,” the group said.

The stakeholders concluded with a firm but respectful appeal, urging Omo-Agege to resist political pressure and remain true to his convictions.

“History is kinder to those who keep their word than to those who bend under pressure,” the statement read. “The strength of your legacy lies not in how long you hold office, but in the integrity with which you choose to step aside.”
