Police uniforms and other election-related items were for sale at various sites throughout Osogbo, the state’s capital, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) got ready for the governorship election in Osun on Saturday.

According to a report by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), their reporter saw a man selling police uniforms by the roadside near the INEC office in Osogbo, the state capital.

A woman was also spotted selling boots and other outfits designed for the mobile police unit of the Nigeria Police.

At the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo, traders were also spotted selling police uniforms and accessories such as daggers and teargas canisters.

In the report, the ICIR reporter offered to buy uniforms and boots and he was told prices for uniforms range from ₦4,000 to ₦6,000. Police caps went for ₦1,500 while belts were sold for ₦2,500.

A police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity told the reporter he bought his dagger for ₦6000, while another said he bought police vests at the rate of ₦2,000. They both confirmed that the police authorities no longer provide uniforms for personnel.

Messages sent by The Guardian to the police authorities were yet to be responded to as of the time of sharing this post especially with the likelihood of criminal elements easily laying their hands on police uniforms and accessories through such avenues.
