The former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mukhtar Shagari, has said that he declined the offer to become the vice presidential candidate to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

Shagari, who was interviewed on Channels TV on Tuesday also revealed why he turned down the offer.

He went on to say that his decision to decline was fueled by the fact that the Labour Party representatives who contacted him were unable to provide a satisfactory answer when he asked how many members of the Labour Party held major positions in Sokoto State.

Shagari said, “I was one of the first people the Labour Party contacted if I would like to be the Vice Presidential candidate to Peter Obi. But at the end of the day, I told them that I will not be able to leave my party.

“Because I believe in the philosophy of my party. I believe in what my party stands for in Nigeria and I also believe that the Labour Party will not be able to defeat my party in any election.”
