Senator Ede Dafinone, representing the Delta Central Senatorial District, has congratulated 16-year-old Nigerian fencer, Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson, on his historic gold-medal victory at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos.
Dafinone, in a congratulatory message, described Esiovwa-Thompson’s achievement as a significant milestone for Nigerian sports and a source of immense pride for Delta State and the Urhobo Nation.
The young fencer made history by winning Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in the Men’s Under-23 Epee event at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
Esiovwa-Thompson produced an impressive unbeaten run in the pool stages before overcoming opponents from South Africa and India on his way to the final.
He defeated India’s Ashwini Shaurya 15–11 in a closely contested semi-final before recording a commanding 15–5 victory over Asian champion Lokesh Verma in the final to secure the historic gold medal.
Dafinone said the feat demonstrated the young athlete’s discipline, determination, composure and commitment to excellence.
According to him, Esiovwa-Thompson’s decision to represent Nigeria after previously competing for England further underlined his patriotism and connection to his Nigerian heritage.
The senator noted that the achievement should serve as an inspiration to young Nigerians to recognise their potential, pursue their talents and strive for excellence on the global stage.
He also commended Esiovwa-Thompson’s parents, coaches and support team for their contribution to his development and success, stressing that the achievements of athletes are often made possible by the dedication and sacrifices of those supporting them behind the scenes.
Dafinone expressed confidence that the young fencer has a promising future and would attain even greater heights in his sporting career.
He assured Esiovwa-Thompson of his continued support and encouraged him to remain focused as he seeks to win more laurels for Delta State and Nigeria.
The senator said the historic victory had brought honour to Delta Central and the Urhobo Nation while giving Nigerians another reason to celebrate the country’s emerging sporting talents.
