In a statement issued on Friday, the foundation commended both the Delta State Government and federal security agencies for their swift response since the incident occurred, noting that early intervention is critical in situations involving abduction.

The foundation acknowledged the growing security challenges across parts of the country but stressed that recent coordinated operations by law enforcement authorities demonstrate a renewed commitment to tackling criminality and restoring public confidence.

According to the statement, the abduction of a sitting local government chairman is not only an attack on an individual but also a challenge to democratic institutions at the grassroots level. It, however, maintained that the resilience of government structures and security networks will ultimately prevail.

Providing background to the incident, the foundation noted that the council chairman, Bright Abeke, was kidnapped on Friday night along Owumi Road in Sapele by suspected gunmen. Sources said the attackers intercepted his movement and whisked him away, while one of his security aides was reportedly shot during the operation and rushed to a nearby hospital. The assailants were said to have operated in a Range Rover SUV, although it remains unclear whether the vehicle was abandoned or used to escape with the victim. As of the time of reporting, no confirmed contact had been made with the family regarding ransom demands.

The group urged security operatives to sustain the current momentum, intensify intelligence gathering, and ensure that those responsible for the crime are brought to justice without delay, thereby sending a strong signal to criminal elements.

While expressing solidarity with the family, the foundation conveyed a message of hope and reassurance, emphasizing that ongoing rescue efforts provide strong grounds for optimism.

“We stand with the family in this difficult moment and share in their hope for the safe and quick return of their loved one. We are encouraged by the visible commitment of authorities working tirelessly behind the scenes,” the statement read.

The Gabriel Sunano Foundation concluded by urging residents of Sapele to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and continue to pray for the chairman safe return while supporting government efforts, expressing confidence that the situation will be resolved successfully in the shortest possible time.
