Following the fatal train accident along the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor near Agbor, Delta State, Senator Ede Dafinone has called for an immediate, transparent investigation and a comprehensive overhaul of national rail safety protocols.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, resulted in three confirmed fatalities, according to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). Numerous other passengers sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the lawmaker representing Delta Central Senatorial District expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing that “every life lost is one too many.”

Dafinone directly challenged federal regulatory bodies, including the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the NRC—to look beyond the immediate aftermath and address systemic vulnerabilities.

“The Warri–Itakpe rail corridor is a vital national asset,” Dafinone stated. “Its continued success depends on both operational efficiency and public confidence in its safety.”

The Senator demanded that the investigation strictly identify any operational or technical failures to ensure future prevention. He urged safety authorities to implement: Comprehensive reviews of safety and operational protocols across the entire national rail network.

Strict compliance with global safety standards and regular, verified track and locomotive maintenance; and deployment of robust emergency preparedness measures to safeguard passengers.

While mourning the dead, Senator Dafinone commended the swift response of the Delta State Government, emergency medical personnel, security agencies, and local volunteers. Their prompt actions on Monday were credited with preventing further loss of life.

The Senator urged authorities to provide immediate, long-term medical care, psychological counselling, and financial support to the injured passengers and the families of the victims to ease their burdens during their recovery.
