LAGOS, Nigeria, Seplat Energy Plc has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action after its flagship Tree4Life Programme achieved a major milestone of 200,000 trees planted, advancing the company’s ambition to establish one million trees by 2030.
The initiative, which combines reforestation, biodiversity conservation and community development, is designed to restore degraded landscapes while creating sustainable economic opportunities for host communities.
According to the company’s 2025 Social Performance Report, the Tree4Life Programme has established nurseries containing more than 175,000 seedlings and trained over 300 community members in tree planting, nursery management and sustainable land-use practices.
Beyond its environmental impact, the programme is delivering socio-economic benefits to participating communities. More than 350 community members have been engaged in activities ranging from site preparation and planting operations to nursery management and logistics, generating economic opportunities while strengthening local participation in environmental conservation.
The programme has also supported community capacity building and sustainable agricultural practices, helping to improve local livelihoods while promoting responsible land management.
Seplat Energy’s approach places host communities and key stakeholders at the centre of its restoration efforts. Through sustained engagement and collaboration, the company is encouraging shared responsibility for forest protection, biodiversity conservation and long-term environmental stewardship across its project locations.
Scaling up restoration efforts
Building on the achievement of 200,000 trees planted, Seplat Energy plans to scale up the Tree4Life Programme from 2026 as part of its broader sustainability strategy.
The next phase will focus on expanding planting activities, restoring degraded landscapes and enhancing biodiversity, while strengthening tree maintenance, survival monitoring and replacement planting to improve the long-term success of the initiative.
The company also plans to expand environmental and social baseline studies, enhance biodiversity monitoring and improve the measurement and verification of carbon sequestration outcomes in line with internationally recognised standards.
These measures are expected to provide a stronger basis for assessing the programme’s environmental impact and tracking progress towards its target of one million trees by 2030.
By combining ecological restoration with community engagement and economic empowerment, the Tree4Life Programme reflects Seplat Energy’s broader approach to integrating environmental responsibility into its operations and sustainability commitments.
The initiative also highlights the role of corporate-led reforestation programmes in addressing climate change, protecting biodiversity and supporting sustainable development in host communities.
As the programme expands, Seplat Energy aims to build on its progress towards creating lasting environmental and social value for present and future generations.
